Our assignment this week is to share stories of the benefits of research to children and families. The story that I would like to share is a personal one. In 1964, my brother was born prematurely. The doctors told my mom that he had a membrane still in his lungs that is not there on full-term babies. That membrane was making it difficult for him to breathe. Luckily for my brother, this happened after President Kennedy lost a child with the same problem. After the Kennedy baby died, doctors began working diligently to find answers about this condition and how it could be treated. By the time my brother was born, they had developed a special chamber and had placed them in a few hospitals around the country.  We were living in the Chicago area at the time and there happened to be one of those machines in a Chicago hospital.

If the doctors had not done the necessary research on the machine to deal with my brother’s condition, he most likely would not have survived. I am sure that it has helped many babies since that time.

  2. I really loved reading your story it was very insightful and gave hope. I think that there are cure for many things and often sometimes doctors might give up but I believe if they had more technology for different things then many things that they say there is no cure for can be cured.

  3. Hi Anita,

This is a really wonderful strong and your brother is such a blessed baby who was cured by the advanced technology. And it recalled me of my oldest uncle's story. He was very clever and cute according to my grandmother, but one day he had got an infection in his lung and had have high fever for many days. In his time, the doctors had yet to discovery a effective medicine to cure that kind of illness, and my uncle unfortunately passed away for the renal failure. Today thanks to the research on the disease that cause the death for young children, many therapeutic methods are found and advanced technologies are made for child healing. It is good to hear stories like your brother's that babies are being saved.

It is amazing the things that they can do for premature babies now. I know that I am grateful because my youngest had breathing problems due to being born early and she is a strong fiery little girl now. Thank you for sharing your story. It amazes me what things prompted certain research to gain momentum.

  5. Anita,

What a great story, thank you for sharing it. The amount of research that has been done to support the youngest lives that are not fully developed yet is amazing and research that continually is being expanded on and new techniques are being developed. I was unaware that research for prematurity dated that far back.
